The Magic Feather

Many of you may remember the marvellous Walt Disney created a cute baby elephant called Dumbo. I do wonder if he might have found a sweeter name, but anyway … Dumbo was born with ginormous ears. Other mummy elephants were rude and made fun of little Dumbo, which annoyed his mother, who ended up in a nasty form of solitary confinement, leaving Dumbo to fend for himself. With a little help from his friends.

One of these friends gave Dumbo a feather - which Dumbo believed was a magic feather and enabled him to fly! Yay! But then on the night of his performance, he dropped his little feather … and lost his belief.

It occurred to me that we all have our “magic feathers”. Often, they are hidden away in our subconscious programming …
They may be our “strengths” - those things that others value which we learn to highlight as aspects of ourselves that get us status and approval. Especially if we “work on our weaknesses” - get rid of the aspects of ourselves we see are less valued.

But we don’t need a magic feather. We fly because of all that we are - the whole of ourselves. We can fly even with big ugly ears that others laugh at. We can fly.

I’ve had mull on my magic feathers - the things I thought enabled me to fly. I have less to lose now I’m older. I’m ready to let go of those feathers and be whole. I just need to see them for what they are. Wonderful parts of me but not the whole, nor the “best” parts. They are all parts. They all enable me to fly.

What might yours be?
