My approach to my coaching and supervision practice

My coaching and supervision philosophy supports clients to handle and navigate ambiguity, lead and facilitate in a complex system, map and manage relationships and explore and reflect on leadership practice.  I help clients do this through creating an open and trusting environment, offering time and space for discussion and reflection and practising as a mindful, compassionate and astute coach and coaching supervisor. A key question I ask is ‘what are you noticing?’ – of myself, my coaching clients and wider system stakeholders. Many of my clients may feel isolated and want to be more connected or, may be in, or at, a liminal space – on a threshold of something they can’t quite put your finger on – and want to move to a space where they are comfortable in their own skin.

What APECS means to me

I was introduced to APECS by my coaching supervisor in 2017 and have been a member for a few years. I was drawn to the philosophical and psychological conversations in the gatherings and events I have participated in and felt I had found my ‘tribe’.  APECS is a widely recognised Executive Coaching and Executive Coaching Supervision accrediting body and a vibrant community of practice where we can deepen our knowledge and experience in our journeys as coaches, supervisors and those who are interested in developing people.  As a Fellow of the CIPD and Higher Education Academy, accreditation is very important to me and I am currently on my APECS accreditation journey as Master Practitioner Coach. The new approach to accreditation is now much more reflexive and I’m enjoying the journey so far and would highly recommend it.

The value I bring to my clients

Clients value my ability to ‘look awry’ and bring a fresh lens in which to see the world.  My open questioning and use of silence has enabled my clients to challenge themselves and to stretch themselves outside their comfort zone. One supervision client said “Julia really helped me to notice what was happening – and I mean really notice!”

As Founder/owner of my consultancy which I set up in 1998, I bring a level of business acumen and tenacity which my clients find helpful and refreshing. I have worked in a range of Executive Director of HR/Workforce roles in health care and charity sectors and have advised a large number of NHS organisations on complex issues in difficult times. Many of my clients are in similar or more senior positions and welcome working with a fellow senior director who is now an executive coach or supervisor.

I am also an experienced Charity Board Trustee/Director/Chair and am on the Board of the Association of Chairs. I have coached many Charity Chairs and Directors/Trustees with excellent feedback and reflection.

Examples of coaching/supervisor work

My coaching clients include a number of Chief Executives, Chairs, national and regional senior health and social care leaders, Chief Executives and Founders/Owners of social enterprises/businesses and Chairs/Chief Officers of charities.

My most recent coaching and coaching supervision work has been focused on individuals where we explored wide ranging topics such as speaking truth to power, impression management and building trust during complex change.

Clients tend to be people who are looking to build their confidence as a leader or coach, develop and sharpen up their leadership or coaching practice and reflexive muscle and may be seeking support on how to move from where they are now to a - known or unknown - liminal place and beyond.

I am also Senior Teaching Fellow at the University of Greenwich and am leading on embedding coaching principles in to our design, pedagogy and practice at the Executive Business Centre.
